Dr. Herbert Benson, a pioneer in mind body medicine and author of “The Relaxation Response” says that the repetitive action of Needlework/Handwork/Origami can induce a relaxed state like the same state associated with meditation and yoga. It can lower heart rate and blood pressure and reduce harmful blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
Schools and prisons with similar programs report that they with time have a calming effect and enhance social skills. Unlike meditation, such programs result in tangible and often useful products that can enhance self esteem in growing children.
To follow complex handwork projects also improve children’s math skills.
